"White Dog, Brown Dog"

Family outings

By MAGGIE WANG

Our little girl looks so grown up ...

She was crossing her legs and reclining with a snack while watching TV. She is definitely one of us.

Last Sunday was a nice family day. Kevin came home in the early morning from the Lakers' playoff game in Utah. We went to watch him get a rare chance to play softball (lots of conflicts with the Lakers schedule) in Cerritos. He says to note that despite the rust he had a 6-3 double-play to end the first inning and a nice running basket catch down the left-field line later. After the game we had yummy Guppy Teahouse food and drink out there before stopping by this fun carnival near home in Hermosa Beach.

Sedona absolutely loved this sports-car carousel. See for yourself ...

Check out that big smile!

Maven wanted to go but did very well standing there and waving to Sedona (and Sedona did well waving back while on the move!).

Kevin then helped Maven get a better view.

More and more people are saying to us that Maven looks like Kevin and Sedona looks like me -- contrary to what our poll concluded. Feel free to share more opinions with us!

Kevin had the day off (rare in the playoffs, but even before that he has been working very harder than any previous season with all the columns he's writing), so we decided to zip down to the Long Beach Aquarium. While en route, we changed our minds and ended up at the Santa Ana (Orange County) Zoo, which we found rather sparsely populated -- but hardly stopped Sedona from having a grand time.

Maven's panda bib was the only bear we saw. The zoo was mostly monkeys and birds, with a nice petting zoo inside.

See ya later!

Happy Easter!

By SEDONA DING

Look what I did the other day at T.L.'s house!
We dyed Easter eggs!

These photos were taken with Mommy's phone and well ... she can't seem to rotate them with Windows Photo Gallery.

But my masterpiece looks good from any angle!

Sedona Can Walk, but Can Austin or Maven?

Happy 1st Birthday, Maven!

By MAVEN DING

On my actual birthday the 8th, my mom started the day by bringing me to Dr. Saad to get THREE shots! I am healthy with a head size of 45 cm, weight of 22 pounds and 13 ounces and height of 29 inches.

Toshi A-Gong, Alice A-Ma and Lulu came to celebrate at Salt Creek Grille. Yummy!

See my chocolate souffle?

Just adorable pictures of me looking out into the world (or the parking lot)!

Sedona at the firepit with Toshi A-Gong.

The whole family! Daddy met us there from LAX upon returning from Portland.

I've gotten really good at hooking my right arm around Daddy's left arm to hold on tight.

With the grandparents!

Sedona is so cute -- and I'm usually OK with her stealing the attention.

Fortunately, Lulu gave me lots of kisses to make me feel extra special.

When we got home, Sedona showed off her skates. Daddy (of course) took this artsy shot.

She might be bossy at times, but she sure is a cute big sister.

Here is her signature hair flip. So girlie!

Kissing up to my daddy! *sigh* ... I've made the full transition from "Dada" to "Daddy," btw.

She is funny!

Chalking up the driveway. I can't wait till I can do it too. Soon enough, hopefully! Sedona tells Mama and Daddy she is looking forward to me playing with her.

Sedona loves to color these days and always wants someone to color with her. She is particular about telling people to put the caps on the end when they are using the markers. (She doesn't seem to like when I try to color with her ... I don't understand why ... what is the problem with putting crayons and markers in your mouth?!)

I know I should like this present because it means I'll have money, but I don't seem so happy, because it's time for bed ...

Good night! Getting ready for bed!

Sedona made Kobe Bryant's Web site!

The text is hard to read so here is what it says under Sedona's picture ...

* * *

Last week we mentioned the Lakers’ recent 13-day road trip took its toll on players, coaches and staff alike. One group we forgot to mention: sportswriters.

Take the O.C. Register’s Kevin Ding, for example. He’s got a 2-½ year-old daughter at home, and he recently started communicating with her from the road using a webcam.

Great idea, right? Well, check out where Kevin says the idea came from:

“From all the reader response to the previous road-trip slideshows, I know there aren't many people out there feeling sorry for me that I have to do all this traveling. I agree that it's a great gig. However, take note: Talking to my 2 1/2-year-old daughter via Web cam is the best I can do from the road. I got the idea to communicate this way originally from Kobe Bryant using it with his daughters.”

“13 days on the road with the Lakers” is the title of Ding’s 23-photo slideshow, which documents the nearly two-week road trip he and the Lakers took. Take a peek at the rest of his photos and stories from each of the team’s seven stops here.

And big ups to family men like Kevin and Kobe!

Bonus Birthday Photos

By MAVEN DING

Here are some more photos from my birthday, courtesy of A-Go Kristen ...

Ha-ha! I got a hold of Sedona's baby doll, which she named "Kelsey" when given a multiple-choice questionnaire from Mama listing all of the names she liked when pregnant with Sedona. "Kelsey" and Sedona sleep together these days in spite of Dada's best efforts to get Sedona to connect with Old Gnow-Gnow (or New Ngow-Ngow).

I love my A-Ma Ding very much. She has been teaching me "peek-a-boo" and "clap."

Sedona doesn't like to smile at the camera but she loves her cousins. She asked them to come over to our home to play more -- and they all went crazy in the bounce house.

Atticus has become a good big-brother type to Sedona and is reportedly moving up the rankings fast as one of Sedona's favorites.

And here's Sedona being a good big-sister type to Baby Austin and me.

Can you name this Disney character? Sedona got this Snow White dress-up outfit as Mama's birthday gift from Texas-based Laney and Kira Williford (daughters of Mama's friend, Julie). Because Mama has increasingly gone to no-gifts formats with her people, instead of exhanging gifts on just our birthdays, we are doing it for our mommies' birthdays, too! Fun for us, huh?

Maven's 1st Birthday Party!

By MAVEN DING

My Birthday isn't until Wednesday, April 8, but we celebrated early!

In keeping with the tradition of Sedona's 1st birthday, we had dim sum at Sea Empress in Gardena and then opened presents at home with family (both A-Gongs & A-Mas, the Ding-Chang family, A-Gu Felix, Gene & Donna, Anita & Jason, and the Tully-Lev family).

This was my cake: a King's Hawaiian Chocolate Dobash cake.

Surprsingly, my mommy allowed me to eat cake for a fun photo -- but she doesn't have to worry, because I didn't like it anyhow ... to which Sedona said, "Cake is good."

Sedona was wanting more after having eaten hers already.

And sure enough, Daddy was a sucker! Something for me to remember for the future!

Sedona always looks forward to feeding the fishies they have in a little brook outside Sea Empress ...

... whereas I was pooped! (I hear there is a similar picture of Sedona after her 1st birthday, falling asleep in the high chair while eating.)

But I got my second wind to open presents. (OK, Sedona opened them, but I still had fun!)

The Ding-Chang family went to Yosemite and bought Sedona popcorn. Isn't that nice? She was so sweet and offered it around to everyone -- even before eating any herself -- but she didn't offer me any. She said, "No, Maven is still a baby."

Overall, I had an enjoyable 1st birthday -- and look forward to more fun Wednesday!
